LOCATED in Dublin's Upper Mount Street is Tom McGrath & Associates Solicitors. Over the past six years they have been advising investors on how to buy and protect their overseas investments. More than 95% of their business is related directly to overseas legal services, such as investments, accidents abroad and lost assets.
Following many years at the coalface of the nation's courts McGrath set up the firm when people started asking him for legal advice in Spain. He had already made a number of contacts in the business community in Spain at that time and now has 25 associates in Spain alone, and has expanded his operation to Portugal, France, Germany and Poland. His association with some of the largest firms also means he can now provide reputable and ethical legal service for clients globally. Tom McGrath comments: "We get enquiries about all sorts of things, including how to get tickets for a Real Madrid match. However, many people actually come looking for advice on how to maximize an investment or where to buy."
Tom's Spanish connections were recently rewarded when the firm won the 2006 Annual Award from the Irish Spain Economic Association. Previous recipients include Aer Lingus and Boyne Valley Foods. No stranger to the public eye, McGrath has also participated on TV3's overseas property show and broadcast with Eddie Hobbs on the Marian Finucane Show. He also works closely with a number of estate agents that have actively sought his advice for their clients at seminars and exhibitions. McGrath continues: "This industry is still relatively new but currently there is no regulation regarding business practices and consumer protection and I am always happy to work with responsible and respectable agents." With the flow of money unabated to other lands from Irish investors, it is not surprising that McGrath's firm is expanding rapidly. In six years, his fulltime staff has increased from one to seven, proving that people are eager to pay for practical and sound advice.
